Paper Topics - Margaret Sanger and ContraceptivesThere is much debate in today's society about the use of Margaret Sanger's book, 'Birth Control - or, Woman's Right to Know', as a source of birth control. Some scholars say that the book was the most influential single social science publication during the 20th century, and in fact, was cited more often than any other text.
We have come a long way from the days of fear of artificial contraception and it is quite amazing to see how the issues of birth control and abortion have evolved. This book did influence Margaret Sanger when she became a health care professional. Even so, her views on birth control has been greatly distorted by her critics. Contraceptives were a hot topic when Margaret Sanger first began her career in a medical field, and they still are today. Many people want to get rid of them from their lives completely, while others believe they should be used only when absolutely necessary. Even those who are opposed to the use of contraceptives would like to use them only as a measure to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Today, birth control is used in sex education classes for both male and female students. Birth control is used in the classroom as a means of educating students about the dangers of premarital sex and about how to limit fertility. Birth control is also used to dissuade teenage girls from engaging in sex before marriage, as the rules and pressures associated with sexual activity can be extremely stressful for both teenagers and young women. Contraception is also used to protect women who have had an abortion. Many women who have undergone an abortion would like to prevent others from having abortions as well. Most people agree that this type of birth control should be used in a therapeutic manner and not used solely for birth control. Margaret Sanger was deeply concerned about the low number of children born in America at the time. She wanted to raise more children and this is why she wrote 'Birth Control - or Woman's Right to Know'. Her goal was to provide a method that would reduce population growth, so that the population could become more stable. Many people agree that birth control is a good thing. As an individual, you can choose to use it to avoid pregnancy or you can use it for protection. The decision depends on your beliefs, but most of us agree that the use of birth control is a perfectly acceptable thing to do. It is one of the most natural, non-harmful methods that one can use for their self and for others. Contraceptives are used to keep the population from over-populating and preventing it from coming too fast into existence.
